A Day with Vivian Ostrovsky

Cultural Workshop Ayion Omologiton in collaboration with Cyprus Contemporary Film Centre are bringing to the Cypriot audience for the first time a special tribute to the avant-garde filmmaker Vivian Ostrovsky.

Vivian Ostrovsky, (b.1945, New York) grew up in Rio, studied film studies and psychology in Paris. When she started filming in 1980, she focused on using analog formats – especially Super8 – for experimental cinema. Her signature collage shorts and avant-garde documentaries have been shown at the main film festivals (Berlin, Rotterdam, Viennale, Tribeca) and have been part of collections such as the MOMA, NY, the Centre Pompidou in Paris and the Freunde der Deutschen Kinemathek in Berlin. Her moving image work is noted for its span of super 8, 16mm, video and digital media, found footage and immersive installations. Her films are connected to Latin America and more particularly Brazil. Whether more personal or historical projects, they are always infused with dreamlike playfulness and intimate nostalgia.

She is a curator for the Jerusalem Film Festival’s Carte Blanche section which shows avant-garde, innovative documentaries and other independent non-mainstream films. She is currently involved in her next film, a non-conventional documentary centered around US poet Elizabeth Bishop’s 15 plus years lived in Brazil.

Μία μέρα με τη Βίβιαν Οστρόφσκι

Το Πολιτιστικό Εργαστήρι Αγίων Ομολογητών σε συνεργασία με το Κυπριακό Κέντρο Σύγχρονου Κινηματογράφου δίνει την ευκαιρία στο κυπριακό κοινό να παρακολουθήσει για πρώτη φορά μέσα από ένα ξεχωριστό αφιέρωμα, ταινίες της πρωτοπόρου κινηματογραφίστριας Βίβιαν Οστρόφσκι.

Η Βίβιαν Οστρόφσκι (1945, Νέα Υόρκη), μεγάλωσε στο Ρίο, και ακολούθησε κινηματογραφικές σπουδές και ψυχολογία στο Παρίσι. Όταν ξεκίνησε να κινηματογραφεί το 1980 επικεντρώθηκε στην χρήση αναλογικών μέσων, ιδιαίτερα Super 8, για πειραματικό κινηματογράφο. Τα φιλμ της έχουν παρουσιαστεί σε μεγάλα φεστιβάλ (Berlin, Rotterdam, Viennale, Tribeca) αλλά και σε συλλογές μουσείων όπως του MOMA, NY, Centre Pompidou και Freunde der Deutschen Kinemathek.

Η δουλειά της χαρακτηρίζεται από μια ευρεία χρήση τόσο αναλογικών όσο και ψηφιακών μέσων, ένα ονειρικό παιχνιδιάρισμα και μια οικεία νοσταλγία άμεσα συνδεδεμένη με την Λατινική Αμερική, και πιο συγκεκριμένα την Βραζιλία.
